HARP Magazine / (Baltimore MD) 'Dave Grohl for President' article layout

Oh, our beloved HARP. We're long-time readers, long-time admirers and long-time collaborators. Our first project for the folks out east was to design their t-shirt — a guitar headstock that featured the names of a hundred or so of HARP's favorite artists (and ours too, actually). We've seen the Detroit Cobras, Martha Wainwright and Liz Phair sport the shirt. Be still, beating heart. What's more, we dusted off our old magazine design and layout skills (someone still loves you, Volkswagen) to do design work for several of the magazine's best issues, including the 5th Anniversary issue, the Return of Funk & Soul feature and, most recently, the Dave Grohl for President article and ensuing political feature.

Loose Records / (London UK) Danny and the Champions of the World, album packaging

As our pal (and fellow champ) John Prine sang, "It's a big ol' goofy world." In our portfolio, there's no finer testament to that lyrics simple, wry truism than our relationship with London's Danny George Wilson. We met Danny through No Depression magazine, and have since created custom posters, tour merch and album art for his solo record, The Famous Mad Mile, the most recent album of the band he fronts with his brother Julian, Grand Drive, and the brand new Danny and The Champions of the World record. And the fact is, it's been a joy. These are three of the finest records released this decade, and we urge to run not walk to your local indie record store and by all three this very moment. Sure, we like it that you're surfing our site right now, but, the site's not changing but your life might be, when you hear this music. Be lucky, indeed.

Oh Boy Records / (Nashville TN) Slick Ballinger

Slick Ballinger presents Mississippi Soul EP, album packaging

It's true — we'd been chasing (OK, stalking) Oh Boy Records for about three years. After a fateful meeting in Nashville, we finally struck a chord (C7, if we remember correctly), and the work has flowed like a good box of wine into a paper cup. We guzzled the wine and have since created album (and DVD) artwork for John Prine, Steve Goodman, Todd Snider, Slick Ballinger and OLG hero, Dan Reeder. We won't work on it if we don't believe in it, but, that policy is truer than ever here: go out and buy these discs, right now. Start with the Reeder.
(Oh, and we've also collaborated with the Oh Boy folks on Mr. Prine's website, tour merch, posters and more, as well as creating retail POP, guerilla marketing, consumer advertising and more for the label. And most often, we're humming along to one of the albums above while creating the work.)

Marah / (South Philly, then Brooklyn NY), show print

Marah are America's greatest rock & roll band. We got to know the kids from Philly during an Indiana swing on the If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry tour, when we designed posters for a couple of their tour stops (including the day after Valentine's Day). The collaborations have continued with a poster we designed for a collaborative show in London (with Nick Hornby, author of About a Boy, High Fidelity and Fever Pitch) and then the album artwork and poster for A Night of Phidelity, which featured Marah hosting a slew of brilliant, like-minded artists. We're not really planning to sleep until we get them to light our fair city on fire.

Touch & Go Records / (Chicago IL) Pinback (San Diego CA) Website / View Site

Ever since we bought that guitar, we've found ourselves in the strangest situations, often working with our heroes, folks we've spent day upon night listening to and daydreaming we were in bands with. We haven't joined any of their bands (yet) but the collaborations continue. For San Diego's Pinback, we spent most days in 2005 and 2006 anticipating their follow-up to Summer in Abaddon. When the new record (Autumn of the Seraphs) was announced, imagine our glee when we were invited to completely relaunch their website to coincide with the release of the new album, and even create a web-based video game to create buzz and word-of-mouth (and get written about in Pitchfork). Click the links to play the game — we're not gonna tell you how we created it, but, rest assured, absurdity was the code.

Sugar Hill Records / (Durham NC) The Infamous Stringdusters (Nashville TN), album packaging

We created this album artwork and tour poster for the ultra-talented bluegrassers from Nashville, The Infamous Stringdusters. These cats can pick! They're bringing bluegrass to a whole new generation (and earning accolades from the elder statesmen & women of the genre) and we were thrilled to get invited to help them share the sound. Working through an amazing collection of photography, we created a half dozen cover concepts, and ran hard with this winner. Best of all, when we put together the cover sticker for the record, a glowing quote from Dolly Parton, OLG's Matt Kelley had to call his mom: "Mom, I just got to type D-O-L-L-Y P-A-R-T-O-N. Is this work?"

Smithsonian Folkways Recordings / (Washington D.C.) Classic Series, album packaging

Our flourishing relationship with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and Smithsonian Global Sound has found OLG collaborating on more than 100 projects: everything from the biggest festival banners to the smallest cover stickers, from national advertising to festival banners and signage, from vehicle graphics to t-shirt designs, from Dave Van Ronk posters to 'Pete Seeger for President' handbills. Working closely with marketing specialist Mark Gustafson, the projects dig in with strong, strategic branding, rootsy touch & feel, and expectation exceeding service and care. Best of all, thanks to Bob Dylan raving like mad about Folkways in his Chronicles Volume One book, we helped develop and implement the 'Dylan Speaks' marketing campaign, with in-store signage, magazine ads, internal distribution marketing and culminating in the Bound for Glory CD sampler available at independent record stores worldwide. Oh, and Dylan's people had to sign off. Bob, call anytime, really.

Steve Forbert / (Nashville TN) Steve Forbert: In Concert, DVD packaging

Steve Forbert, he's our guy. One of America's great songwriters, we're long-time admirers and have been over-the-moon at the opportunities we've had to help him share his music with a wider audience. Our work for Steve includes the packaging for his In Concert DVD, featuring a live performance from Buellton CA that's one hell of a viewing to savor. We also designed the posters for Steve's tour in support of Young, Guitar Days with the band The Destinations. The award-winning posters were sold at gigs and later autographed by Steve. OLG's Matt Kelley even met up with the tour for the East Coast leg of the tour to carry some amps, string some guitars, and realize what it's like to load-out, leave Pittsburgh at 1AM and drive a rented Pontiac straight through to Baltimore. And then Annapolis, all around Jersey, upstate in NY, and down to the city. Best of luck, and all.

Wildflower Records / (New York NY) Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney

For Wildflower Records, we've designed the album artwork for two stunners with stunning albums, Judy Collins (Sings Lennon & McCartney) and Amy Speace (Songs for Bright Street). Our collaboration with Amy dates back to a great meeting at the Americana Music Association conference in Nashville, TN, and we've since designed her tour merch, band logo, website and more. We'll imminently be adding artwork for her forthcoming The Killer in Me album to the site, and we can't wait. We're proud and smitten to be involved with her blossoming career. With Judy Collins, well, what a thrill. Our work on this prescient album (following in the footsteps of her Dylan and Cohen collections) was a wonderful, wild experience. Sincerely, O. Guitar

For the last four years, we've created the album artwork for the Independent Music Awards' Now Hear This collection of IMA winners' tracks. These albums have been made available at festivals, Borders stores and independent retailers nationwide, and each year has featured a unique and inspired design. The IMA winners are announced in each year's Musician's Atlas, an essential resource for musicians of all genres, and are curated by Martin and Jude Folkman (and the good folks at MRG), two of the finest folks in the industry. What's more, they gather an amazing group of judges for the awards, and one, Peter Gabriel, apparently just adored our 2007 cover. Thanks, Peter. You haven't done so bad yourself.

Southern Can CDs / (Fort Wayne IN) John Minton: Going Back to Vicksburg, album packaging

OLG started working with Indiana University folklife professor John Minton on the design of his second record, Going Back to Vicksburg, and have continued with his band's self-titled album The Possum Trot Orchestra and their most recent, Harbor Road. These UK and NPR favorites make quite incredible music, and all we do is pull out all the stops to match the inspired sound. Drawing on a deep well of inspiration from traditional American roots music, combined with contemporary Americana, the Possums churn out masterpiece after masterpiece. Collaborating with Minton on art direction is a delight, as John tends to provide a hundred or so pages of source material and background. We've played with the Possums and they've been part of our Flatpick Music Revue, the Trainhopper Hootenanny for Downtown Improvement District and Down the Line 2. The honor has been all ours.

Planet Bluegrass / (Lyons CO) 16th Annual Folks Fest, event program

In 2005, the Planet Bluegrass folks — the good people behind the Colorado trifecta of incredible music festivals (Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rocky Grass Festival and Folks Festival) — wanted to break from their watercolor tradition and launch a whole new look. We worked with the hyper-talented photographer Tom Galliher on a series of posters, and also created ads, program covers, laminates, album artwork and more. Reports from the festival (we stayed home for a baby delivery) were that our t-shirt designs demolished previous years' sales. We moved the daily 4PM dance party to 3:30 for the rest of the summer. (It's true.) In 2006, we completed designs for Rocky Grass and Folks Fest again, and this time went on out to Lyons to take it all in. It's magic, folks. Go.
